cavity danger

Tooth decay is one of the most common of all disorders in young people. It usually happens in children and young adults, thus it is a common reason of tooth loss in youth.

A cavity is a hole in the tooth that is caused by decay. Decay takes place when plague, the sticky substance that forms on teeth, combines with the sugars or starch of the food we eat. Bacteria, acid, food debris, and spit combine in the mouth in order to form a sticky substance called plaque that binds to the teeth.

Plaque begins to build up on teeth in about 20 minutes after eating. If this plaque is not taken out well and routinely, tooth decay will not only start, but thrive.

If you don't go to the tooth doctor, the acids can extend to make their path by the enamel, and the inside parts of your tooth can begin to decay. If you've ever had a toothache it may have been because there was a cavity that reached all the way inside a tooth.

The best way to prevent tooth decay is brushing twice a day, flossing daily and going to your regular dental check ups. Eating healthy foods and avoiding snacks and drinks that are high in sugar are also ways to prevent decay.

Cavities danger:

  • Toothache
  • Visible pits or holes in the teeth
  • tooth abscess
  • fractured tooth
  • discomfort or pain
  • tooth sensitivity
  • inability to bite down on tooth

Preventing tooth decay:
  • brush or floss teeth after every meal
  • Eat foods without sugar
  • Don't eat snacks. Just think of the bacteria count of your mouth after three meals, that can equal 60 minutes of acid production a day!
  • Eat healthy foods
  • Don't smoke.
